During my holiday in Turkey, I experienced something I had been wanting to do for a long time – attend a Dervish show. Said and done.
I went to Mesale Café, which is only 3 minutes away from SultanAhmet mosque (also known as The Blue Mosque)
I had always been captivated by the mysticism of the whirling Dervishes and their meditative dance, and that night, I walked into the show with high hopes and an open heart.
As the performance began, the Dervish gracefully entered the stage, his presence serene and commanding. I watched, mesmerized, as he started to whirl, his robe spinning around him like a soft, flowing wave. But then, something caught my attention—his right hand was open, reaching towards the sky, while his left hand was facing downwards towards the earth.
In that moment, I felt a deep realization bloom within me. I knew that the whirling performed by Dervishes is a form of meditation, a practice that allows them to transcend ordinary consciousness and connect with higher dimensions of spiritual insight. As I watched, an epiphany began to unfold within me, which took the form of a profound metaphor for life itself.
I realized that the Dervish, with his open hand reaching towards the sky, symbolized a clear and open channel for divine inspiration and guidance.
In that moment, I understood that we, too, can be like the Dervish.
When we maintain a high vibration—when we feel good, remain positive, and keep our energy aligned with love and light—we become open channels through which the Divine can flow.
This openness is not just for the dervish.
It is for all of us.
When we align ourselves with positivity, with love, and hope, we become clear channels for divine energy to flow through us. And just as the Dervish releases that energy through his movements, we release it through our actions, our words, our creations. We receive from above and we pour that inspiration into the world, enriching the lives of those around us.
But I also realized that when we are closed—when we are stuck in negativity, doubt, or fear—nothing can flow through us. We cut off that divine connection, and as a result, we have nothing to give, neither to ourselves nor to the world.
That evening, something shifted within me. It wasn’t just an “aha” moment—it felt like a truth that would stay with me for life. I knew that from then on, my greatest responsibility was to ensure that I remained open, vibrated high and took care of my energy. Because when I do, I am that open hand connected to the Divine, allowing inspiration to flow through me and into the world.
That evening, I felt a powerful shift within me, one that I knew would guide me from that moment forward.
As a reminder of this breakthrough, I bought a statue of a whirling Dervish, which now sits in my room. Every time I see it, I’m reminded of that Tuesday evening in Turkey when I realized the importance of being an open channel; the importance of keeping my energy high, and giving myself the best so that I can give my best to the world.
This experience taught me if I don’t feel good, if I don’t allow myself to be open, then I have nothing to give to this world. It’s a reminder that to truly serve others, I must first take care of my own energy, allowing myself to be that open channel through which the divine flows.
And so, every day, I strive to keep my hand—my heart—open to the sky. I strive to feel good, stay connected and vibrate at my highest frequency.
The world benefits most when we allow ourselves to be clear channels of love, light, and inspiration. And for that, I am forever grateful for the lesson I received from the Dervish that evening.
